Who were the chief ministers of Delhi in the past?

BJP has made a historical win in Delhi. After a span of 27 years, BJP is poised to form a government in India's capital.


Delhi, a city steeped in history and now the bustling capital of India, has witnessed a dynamic political journey since its designation as a Union Territory and later as a state. From its early days under Chief Ministers like Brahm Prakash and Gurmukh Nihal Singh to its more recent leadership, Delhi's governance has been shaped by a diverse array of personalities. This list provides a comprehensive overview of all the Chief Ministers who have served Delhi, offering a glimpse into the city's evolving political landscape and the individuals who have steered its course.


  1. Brahm Prakash (1952-1955)

    At the young age of 34 years, Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became the first Chief Minister of Delhi in 1952. He served for 2 years, from 17 March 1952 to 12 February 1955.


  2. Gurmukh Nihal Singh (1955-1956)

    12 February 1955 onwards Gurmukh Nihal Singh became the second Chief Minister of Delhi. he served for one year, uptill 1 November 1956. He later went on to become the first Governor of Rajasthan.


For 37 years, Delhi was an Union Territory and thus did not have a Legislative Assembly and no CM.


  1. Madan Lal Khurana (1993-1996)

    Known for his strong leadership and organizational skills, he played a crucial role in reviving the BJP in Delhi after the 1984 general elections, earning him the title "Dilli Ka Sher" (Lion of Delhi). He was the Chief Minister of Delhi from 2 December 1993 to 26 February 1996.


  2. Sahib Singh Verma (1996-1998)

    Sahib Singh Verma started his political journey as an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 1977, initially as a Janata Party candidate and later re-elected on a BJP ticket. Later he became the Education and Development Minister in the Delhi government in 1993.


    He then served as the Chief Minister of Delhi for over two years, from 26 February 1966 to 12 October 1998. His tenure was marked by efforts to improve infrastructure and address the city's challenges.   


  3. Sushma Swaraj (1998)

    Sushma Swaraj was the Chief Minister of Delhi for only 52 days. She was the first women CM to Delhi. She replaced Sahib Singh Verma, during the 1998 Onion price crises. Soon the assembly elections were held and BJP lost their power in Delhi.


  4. Sheila Dikshit (1998-2013)

    Sheila Dikshit was a prominent Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Delhi for three consecutive terms, making her the longest-serving female Chief Minister of any Indian state.

    Sheila Dikshit was in power for 15 years, from 3 December 1998 to 28 December 2013, holding three consecutive terms.


  5. Arvind Kejriwal (2013-2014)

    Soon after launching his political party, Arvind Kejriwal was the new face of Delhi. He won the 2013 Delhi General Elections. However, he resigned after 48 days of being CM. Later in 2015, he was again appointed the Chief minister of Delhi. He ran the office for 9 years, from 14 February 2014 to 21 September 2024.


  6. Atishi Marlena (2024-present)

    September 21, 2024 onwards Atishi Marlena held the CM office.
