The sacred days of Paryushan are the most significant annual observance for Jains.
Paryushan is the most sacred and important annual festival in Jainism. It is observed by the Jains worldwide.
Paryushan is an 8- to 10-day period that the Jains dedicate to spiritual purification, self-reflection, and seeking forgiveness. The word "Paryushan" itself has been interpreted to mean "abiding and coming together," or "to burn away" all kinds of karma.
Paryushan typically takes place during the monsoon season, a time when ancient Jain monks would settle in one place to avoid harming the small creatures that emerge with the rains.
During Paryushan, Jains engage in various practices to deepen their spiritual discipline. They observe fasts, ranging from eating only once a day to a complete fast for the entire duration, consuming only boiled water between sunrise and sunset.
To adhere to the principle of non-violence (Ahimsa), Jains avoid root vegetables like potatoes, onions, and garlic, as pulling them from the ground can harm the organisms within the soil.
A key ritual during Paryushan is Pratikraman, a kind of introspection. Devotees attend temple sermons and read sacred texts to deepen their understanding of Jain philosophy and the path to liberation (Moksha).
The festival culminates on the final day, known as Samvatsari for Svetambaras and Kshamavani for Digambaras. On this day, Jains ask for forgiveness from all living beings for any harm they may have caused, knowingly or unknowingly.
During Paryushan and especially on the last day, Jains ask for forgiveness using the phrase "Michhami Dukkadam".
Paryushan is a powerful time for Jains to renew their commitment to the core tenets of their faith and to cleanse their minds, bodies, and souls of negative karma. It is a festival of profound personal and communal significance, fostering humility, compassion, and reconciliation.
To get more insight about the Jain philosophy and to strengthen your faith I found a few modern day products.
